How Is Physiotherapy Different From Personal Training?

Because physiotherapy at OAA takes place in a gym-style performance environment, it’s common for people to wonder whether it’s the same as personal training. While the setting may look similar, the role, purpose, and scope of care are very different.
Physiotherapy is a regulated health care profession. A physiotherapist’s role is to assess, diagnose, and treat injuries, pain, and movement dysfunction. Treatment is based on clinical assessment, injury history, and evidence-informed decision-making. Exercises are prescribed specifically for rehabilitation, whether the goal is pain reduction, restoring mobility, rebuilding strength after injury, or guiding a safe return to sport or daily activity.
Personal training, by contrast, focuses on general fitness, strength, and conditioning. Personal trainers do not diagnose injuries or provide medical treatment, and training programs are not designed to manage pain or injury-related limitations.
Why Physiotherapy at OAA Happens in a Gym Space

At OAA, physiotherapy is intentionally delivered in a performance training environment. This allows rehab to progress beyond the treatment table and into meaningful, real-world movement.
Using a gym space allows your physiotherapist to:
-
Progress strength and load safely as tissues heal
-
Reintroduce functional and sport-specific movements
-
Address movement patterns that matter for work, sport, and daily life
-
Build confidence before returning to full activity
This model bridges the gap between rehabilitation and performance, ensuring you’re not just pain-free, but prepared to move well and stay active, while remaining fully within physiotherapy’s regulated scope of practice.
