Giving Back to the Oakville Community (updated)

We might be seen as a new-age physio, with our services that include physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage therapy and sports medicine. But we are committed to serving the communities of Oakville, Burlington and Mississauga.

Our practice in Oakville has extended hours of operation. We understand the people of our community need help outside standard working hours. And we aim to provide the services you need in a relaxed but professional environment.

Sheddon Physiotherapy and Sports Clinic (SPSC) has been a member of the Oakville community for over 15 years. During that time we’ve developed relationships with several local businesses, organizations and teams. As such, SPSC strongly believes in being involved within the Oakville community and giving back to those who have supported us throughout the years, as well as helping those who are less fortunate.

Part of our commitment to giving back includes work with the Kerr Street Mission, Pioneer Camp, GENEius Girls Biotechnology Camp and promoting girl’s soccer in Oakville by sponsoring the Future Girls Soccer Academy.

Inspire high school girls in STEM

SPSC continues to work with Kerr Street Mission, Pioneer Camp, and most recently, GENEius Girls Biotechnology Camp. GENEius Girls is a new science outreach organization, starting up locally in Oakville, to inspire and support high school girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) through the lens of genetics and biotechnology.

Unfortunately, girls need more support and encouragement in STEM subjects, and this camp was developed to do just that. If you would like to know more about this exciting new initiative, you can find more information here. Girls fully understand the subject matter but have historically been discouraged to pursue careers in STEM.

Statistics Canada, in their report on women in STEM programs states that in 2016, women made up only 34% of STEM bachelor’s degree holders and 23% of science and technology workers among Canadians aged twenty-six to sixty-four years old. The camp, and our support of it, hope to change this.

Encourage girls to play soccer

Sheddon Physiotherapy and Sports Clinics sponsorship of a new soccer academy led by female coaches inspiring young female athletes – Future Girls Soccer. Future Girls Soccer is the first and only ALL GIRLS soccer academy in Ontario. Their all-female coaching staff has decades of coaching and playing experience in the U.S.-based National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and at the international level.

They have programs for girls aged 4-14 years old across all skill levels, including development house leagues, goalie training, skills development, competitive programs and summer camps. Their mission is to develop all their players into strong young ladies, impressive soccer players and healthy athletes.

Giving Back to the Oakville CommunitySheddon is excited to be working with Future Girls Soccer and assisting with education, injury prevention, sport specific rehabilitation and performance both on and off the field.

Sheddon’s Athletic Therapist Anson Ly recently gave a presentation to the U12 girls. He discussed injury prevention and basic nutrition guidance for young athletes. He also demonstrated, as well as demonstrating the “PAIRS Program,” a Prevention Program to Assist with Injury Reduction in Sport. If you would like a handout of Anson’s presentation, including a downloadable copy of the PAIRS program, click here.

With the PAIRS program, future girls would pair up facing each other. Then they would mirror each other while going through a set of movements. The program takes ten minutes and requires no equipment. It is designed to teach proper muscle patterning/memory required in sport to reduce the risk of injury.

Invest in your community

We strongly encourage our clients to give back to the community in any way that they can. Whether you donate your time, money or expertise, investing in your community helps support and strengthen your local neighborhood.
